Spain’s online gambling industry hit a record €1.45 billion in 2024, driven by strong growth in online casinos and sports betting. Explore key stats and market insights.
Online Casinos and Sports Betting Dominate the Market
Online casinos led the market with €730.7 million in GGR, reflecting a 17% increase from the previous year. Slot games continued to be the top performer, generating €472.2 million — a 22.8% jump. Live roulette also posted notable gains, bringing in €208.8 million.
Sports betting came in just behind, racking up €608.9 million in GGR, up 23.8% year-on-year. Live in-play betting saw particularly strong engagement, generating €285.1 million, narrowly surpassing pre-match betting at €284.7 million.
Mixed Results in Poker and Bingo
The poker vertical struggled in 2024, with revenues falling by 4.99% to €100.1 million. Tournament poker dropped 3.48%, while cash games declined more steeply by 8.97%.
In contrast, online bingo posted modest but positive growth. Total revenue reached €14.9 million, marking a 3.96% increase from the previous year.
Marketing Spend Soars as Ad Restrictions Ease
Marketing expenditure by licensed operators surged to €526.3 million — a 30.4% rise compared to 2023. This spike followed the partial reversal of strict advertising regulations in April.
Bonuses made up the largest share of marketing spend at €261.5 million, an increase of 30.8%. Advertising spend jumped 37.2%, while promotions grew by 30.8%, reflecting fierce competition for player acquisition.
Player Activity Reaches New Milestone
User engagement hit record levels in 2024. The number of active players grew to 1.99 million — up 21.7% from the previous year. The total number of active accounts climbed 26% to 3.8 million, with monthly active users averaging 1.4 million, up 23.5%.
New account registrations surged 34.7%, averaging nearly 152,000 sign-ups per month, highlighting growing consumer interest and operator reach.
Outlook for 2025
The Spanish online gambling market continues to show remarkable growth and resilience. With casino and sports betting verticals thriving and user activity on the rise, the industry is well-positioned for continued momentum in 2025.
However, the drop in poker revenues signals the need for innovation in that segment. Operators who diversify offerings and capitalize on the renewed advertising freedom could stand to gain the most in the coming year.
