Plans for measures in Italy’s gambling industry are underway, which could add a boost of €400m-€500m to its 2027 state budget.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ordered the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) to consider possible measures meant to generate income for the 2027 budget.
However, no initiative has made it into the draft of the budget bill yet. An extension of the concession period for retail gambling is the main option on the agenda.
The planned extension would bring an average revenue of over €200m-€250m each year to the budget. The current fees charged for a concession are €120 for each amusement-with-prizes machine, €4,000 for each video lottery terminal, and €9,500 for a betting agency license.
In addition, the planned extension would give the government additional time to plan modernization of the gambling sector in Italy.
Recent rounds of negotiations between the government and the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces took place without reaching an agreement. The three-year mandate established by the Tax Delegation Law expired on August 29.
According to some sources, the absence of new concessions has cost the government €1.5bn.
