MGM China has introduced an eco-friendly initiative that involves giving used playing cards a second life by converting them into recycled packaging materials. For the implementation of the initiative, the company has joined hands with Fnetlink Technology Co Ltd, a Macau based tech company, the turning only fully, first local system, region both recycle, upcycle gaming cards instead dispose.
The programme is an extension of the first collaboration that the two parties had in 2023 when they started working on a fully automatic process for shredding and handling used cards. What was initially just a development phase has turned into a complete operational system in MGM China’s operations.
The company disclosure reveals that gaming cards withdrawn from gaming floors are fed to an automated card shredding line. Next, the shredded paper is sent to a local plant where it is transformed into recycled hairs of top-quality. One fascinating aspect is that the entire process is not water-dependent. Subsequently, the fibers are used as elements for producing environmentally friendly packaging. Thus, the cards are given a second life in Macao’s supply chain.
Following the full introduction, the machine will be capable of processing about 3,000 tons of used cards on an annual basis with full recycling not being part of the product life cycle. The declaration of this project means it is not a fleeting experiment but a permanent method of waste produced by this product category for which MGM China is responsible.
The launch ceremony of the program took place this week and Macau government officials were accompanied by senior executives of the two companies.
Sustainability Goals and Local Impact
MGM China went on to state that the initiative is really a quite feasible way of improving the use of resources through technology. Producing fibers from waste materials shredded is only one part of the project. The whole process is being carried out in Macau meaning that apart from waste being recycled, local industrial activity will also be supported through fibers production rather than having to depend on outsourcing that happens in other places. Besides, the choice of packaged product also reflects the demand for sustainable materials in business use.
Mr. Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng (the Chief Executive and Executive Director) of the company remarked that MGM China has always been on a lookout for new ways to materialize its ideas by technology especially of sustainability in their various local properties. As a matter of fact, he cited as a result of the focus on long-term, practical solutions that the environmental actions being treated as isolated add-ons was changed through the upcycled playing cards system which, besides, aligns with a healthy and greener environment. He also gave more details on the collaboration with Fnetlink Technology saying that it is quite a good instance of how tech companies being supported in their locality can be made easier to the point from an idea to a real-world application. He said that this kind of working together is one of the best ways of quickly arriving at the working models one wants.
Economic Diversification and Broader Benefits
Alongside emphasizing the need to cut down wastage, MGM China also linked the initiative with Macau’s overarching goal of transforming the economy. The company mentioned that such projects are capable of not only introducing new ways and opportunities but also exposing the potential for marrying gaming functions with other sectors through technology and reuse. In addition, as the entire operation from garbage collection and shredding to fiber extraction and packaging is carried out locally, the project is aligned with the broader movement aimed at elevating the local capabilities in the tourism and entertainment-related higher value sectors.
For MGM China, this is the means of illustrating that even deeply ingrained working practices can be altered to serve both sustainability objectives and the economic growth over the medium to long term.
