According to reports, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is now actively engaged in talks with both Kalshi and Polymarket about a possible partnership with them in the area of prediction markets. This suggests an alternative approach for how leagues will interact in terms of emerging betting-like products.
The NBA has been in ongoing communication with both companies for approximately one year. However, discussions between the NBA and the two companies have accelerated dramatically over the past several months. The acceleration of the talks has largely been due to the increased regulatory clarity as well as increased regulator engagement (CFTC) on the use of prediction markets.
Sources have reported that the discussions have reached a more mature stage, and that the NBA has presented executive staff and team presidents with updates on the current status during internal organizational meetings.
The NBA is looking for ways to be able to monitor for suspicious activity and to ensure they maintain the integrity of their competitions should any agreement ultimately be reached.
Currently, the NBA already has relationships with traditional sportsbooks such as DraftKings and FanDuel. As such, there seems to be a larger strategic objective of working with multiple prediction market and betting operators.
At this time, no agreement has been made and there is no established timeline regarding a potential agreement; however, the NBA’s interest in engaging with prediction market platforms is indicative of a significant change in League and operator partnerships.
