Malaysia has removed over 457,000 gambling-related posts and blocked almost 1,800 illegal gambling websites. According to the Communication Ministry of Malaysia, the actions were taken between Jan 1-May 31, 2025.
According to the Ministry, the removed posts account for 98% of the total 467,772 takedown requests made by the ministry following proactive monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and referrals from law enforcement agencies.
The government further stated that gambling enforcement legally belongs to the police. The MCMC assists in carrying out investigations through website blocking, as provided under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025.
The government sent another response to Mr. Prabakaran M Parameswaran, informing him that the MCMC issued 275,787 removal requests for scam-related content between January 1, 2022, and June 30 of this year. The requests pertained to fake identities and impersonation.
It was indicated in the letter that the removal process has been able to remove 262,293 posts (i.e., 95%) based on the complaints made by providers and by referring to the laws applicable in the area.
The Online Safety Act 2025 also stated that 5 requests for removal of financial fraud-related content were received between January 1 and June 30 this year. All 5 requests were successfully removed.
